Harvest of the 2008 whites was odd to say the least. With a cold, wet spring and a cool summer punctuated thunderstorms, our harvest was delayed by about two weeks. We started harvesting the whites on the 23rd of September and finished all but a small section of Sauvignon Blanc by the 13th of October. Our last acre of Sauvignon Blanc was left to make a late-harvest style Sauvignon Blanc and was picked on the sixth of November. Overcast weather and a chill in the air were firm signals to harvest the last fruit of the season.
The key to Kamiak White lies in the artful blending of multiple grapes to achieve a wine with a unique personality showcasing the best of its individual components. Previous versions of this wine contained small percentages of Gewürztraminer to provide just a hint of sweetness, rounding out the sharpness of the Sauvignon Blanc. Based on our unusual weather in 2008 we were fairly confident that our Gewürztraminer would go into our Ice Wine program, leaving a dilemma of “sweet proportions”. Mid-way through the Sauvignon Blanc harvest we struck upon the idea of making a late-harvest Sauvignon Blanc. Not only would the wine taste great and make a fabulous addition to our Kamiak White, but our “sweet” dilemma was solved at the same time. Utilizing the late harvest and some interesting lots of Sauvignon
Blanc, we were given a base wine that was light on its feet with firm acidity and ample fruit flavors. Just a touch of Chardonnay was used to give this already amazing wine some depth and complexity.
The nose is teased with hints of apricot, nectarines, and cinnamon. Slightly sweet flavors of cherries, maple, and mint quickly give way to a longer-than-expected satisfying mineral finish. This ample-bodied white blend is a proudly crafted marriage of fruit and oak. Pair this wine with your favorite salmon dish or poultry.
