The 2006 vintage was yet another year of perfect grape growing weather in Washington State. After a wetter than normal Spring, a long, hot summer blossomed, decreasing the quantity harvested, but increasing the quality. Autumn was ideal with dry and warm conditions, making harvest pleasant and flavors perfect.
After picking, the Estate Grown Merlot was gently crushed into open top stainless steel fermentation tanks. The skins and juice were allowed to “cold soak” for a number of days prior to the addition of cultured yeast. This process creates darker colors and enhances the ripeness of flavors. After fermentation was completed, the finished wine was drawn off and the skins were pressed. The entire vintage was aged in small French and American oak barrels. The wines were racked several times to clarify the wine and to soften the tannins.
The bright garnet color of this wine lends instant appeal. A rich, toasty oak, combined with lush, concentrated dark cherry and berry aromas greet the nose. Flavors of chocolate, spice and plum linger on the palate. This bold Merlot has a rich, well-balanced mouth-feel, and a wonderful smooth finish. This is a great wine to pair with your favorite grilled meats and a Bolognese pasta sauce.
