Unusual conditions during the growing season led to exceptional quality grapes for Gordon Brothers in 1999. Although a very cool spring and summer were threatening the grapes, September abruptly turned sunny and hot. This slower ripening cycle allowed our reds to gain tremendous flavor intensity while retaining a full structure. We harvested the Cabernet Sauvignon from our estate vineyard in the third week of October.
After crushing and adding yeast, we monitored the alcoholic fermentation and pumped over the must two to three times a day in order to extract all the pigments and flavors from the skin of the berries. Upon completion of this process, the wine was pressed and racked into barrels. We used mostly French oak with a small portion of American oak during the 18 months aging process. Before bottling a small amount of Merlot was blended with the Cabernet Sauvignon to enhance the wine’s smoothness and complexity.
Dark ruby with a black cherry cast with aromas of rose and dried herbs along with a touch of coffee. The mouth is dense, powerful and fruit driven, and shows exceptional balance. The finish is smooth, supple, and sophisticated with loads of berry flavors and a gentle hint of oak. This wine, with great balance and fruit, is soft enough to drink now, yet structured enough to age for the next few years.
